THE MOONSHINE PATINA STORY

MoonShine Patina Co. started with Raymond “Red” Mallory, a Lower Keys moonshine runner whose
family had been in the islands since Flagler’s railroad days. Back then, the Mallorys moved whatever
needed moving — rum, medicine, fuel — through the backcountry flats where no law bothered to go.
Red did most of his runs in the family’s 1946 Dodge pickup. Salt air should’ve destroyed that truck, but
it didn’t. Their secret was an old natural oil blend passed down from Flagler-era mechanics and local
Indian fishermen — a mix of plant oils, fish oils, mangrove sap, and tar that kept tools, boats, and steel
alive in salt water.

Red used that blend on the Dodge without fail. That truck survived decades of Lower Keys punishment,
and that blend is the only reason why.

In the early ’70s a run near Spanish Harbor went bad, and Red took an 11-year federal hit. While
locked up, he rewrote the natural formula over and over — breaking it down to the base oils, rebuilding
it stronger each time, and turning it into something better than anything his family ever used.
When Red died, everything he left behind came down to two things: his notebook… and that salt-proof
Dodge.

I rebuilt the truck and saw firsthand why it survived — every bolt clean, every panel solid. His natural oil
formula worked.

I modernized it without changing its roots — the same outlaw blend born from smugglers, Indian
boatbuilders, and railroad mechanics who fought the salt every day.
